Acapulco, Mexico (SportsNetwork.com) - Andy Murray survived a quarterfinal scare Thursday at the $1.309 million Mexican Open, while top-seeded David Ferrer couldn't dodge an injury that forced him out of the tournament.
Murray, who is seeded second this week, outlasted sixth-seeded Gilles Simon 1-6, 7-6 (7-4), 6-2 in a 2-hour, 34-minute marathon.
Earlier, Ferrer was facing Kevin Anderson and won the first set 6-2, but after going down 4-2 in the second set, the Spaniard called on the trainers due to a left leg strain that ultimately ended the match.
Anderson, last week's runner-up in Delray Beach, moved on as a result, and the South African will next face Alexandr Dolgopolov, who downed Ivo Karlovic 6-4, 7-6 (7-4) on the red clay at the Fairmont Acapulco Princess.
Dolgopolov was last week's Rio de Janeiro runner-up.
The other semifinal will pit Murray opposite fourth-seeded Grigor Dimitrov, a 4-6, 7-6 (7-2), 7-5 winner over seventh-seeded Ernests Gulbis.
Ferrer was last year's runner up to Rafael Nadal at this event after titling here from 2010-12.
