American forward Mike Grella's loan to Motherwell of the Scottish Premier League from Leeds of England's second-tier League Championship has been canceled because of FIFA regulations.

A day after announcing the loan, Motherwell said on its Web site Friday that while a player can register for three clubs in a year, he can play for two.

Motherwell chief executive Leeann Dempster said FIFA rules "have worked against us, which is extremely disappointing."

After making just two appearances this season for Leeds, both as a substitute, the 23-year-old was loaned in October to Carlisle of England's third-tier League One, where he scored three goals in 11 games.
