The son of Detroit Pistons great Joe Dumars is leaving the University of Michigan basketball team because of knee and shoulder injuries.

Jordan Dumars transferred to Michigan from South Florida midway through his freshman season two years ago but has never played a game for the Wolverines.

"Battling injuries the last two years has been very difficult on me," the younger Dumars said in a statement Monday. "I love Michigan, I love this team and I love basketball. However, I had to make this decision to move on."

Head coach John Beilein said the junior guard worked hard to get back on the court, but his injuries prevented him from playing "at a level he expects."

"This has not been easy for him and I know he has thought long and hard about this decision," said Beilein. "We will miss Jordan. He is a wonderful young man, with a very bright future."

Joe Dumars played all 14 of his NBA seasons for the Pistons and was inducted in the Basketball Hall of Fame in 2006. He is currently president of the team.
