NEW YORK – Ronny Cedeno was placed on the 15-day disabled list Wednesday with a strained left calf, leaving the New York Mets minus yet another shortstop.
The team recalled infielder Jordany Valdespin from Triple-A Buffalo before the finale of a three-game series against Philadelphia.
Cedeno was subbing at shortstop for starter Ruben Tejada, on the DL since May 7 with a strained right quadriceps. After Cedeno went down, fill-in Justin Turner sprained his right ankle Monday and was put on the 15-day DL the following day.
Omar Quintanilla was called up from Buffalo and had three hits in Tuesday night's victory over the Phillies. Quintanilla was in the lineup again Wednesday night.
Cedeno, hitless in his last 14 at-bats, is batting .231 with a homer and seven RBIs. He was on the DL earlier this season with an intercostal strain.
He tested his leg before Wednesday's game and the Mets decided to put him on the disabled list, retroactive to Sunday.
Valdespin went 2 for 20 (.100) in his previous two stints with the Mets this season. His first major league hit came as a pinch-hitter, a three-run homer off Phillies closer Jonathan Papelbon in the ninth inning that sent New York to a 5-2 victory on May 7.
Following the departure of All-Star Jose Reyes last winter, New York has used six shortstops already this season, including Valdespin and third baseman David Wright.
Reyes signed a $106 million, six-year contract with the Marlins in December.
