Flushing, NY (SportsNetwork.com) - Curtis Granderson led off with a homer and Noah Syndergaard won his Citi Field debut as the Mets earned a 5-1 victory over the Brewers on Sunday.
Syndergaard (1-1) was exceptional in his second career start, save for a 97 mph pitch that got away and beaned Carlos Gomez in the helmet. The 22-year-old righty lasted six innings and allowed one run on three hits and a walk.
"Always nice getting that first W out of the way," said Syndergaard.
Lucas Duda doubled twice and drove in a run, while Michael Cuddyer knocked in a pair for the Mets, who followed up a five-game skid by winning the final two meetings of the three-game series.
Wily Peralta (1-5) last just five-plus innings and was touched for five runs on nine hits in Milwaukee's fourth loss in five games.
Granderson launched the 30th leadoff home run of his career with a towering shot into the right-field seats, and back-to-back doubles by Eric Campbell and Duda in the third inning gave the Mets a 2-0 lead.
Peralta, who came in 3-0 with a 1.35 ERA in three career starts against the Mets, surrendered three more runs in the fourth. Campbell slapped a single through the right side to plate Johnny Monell with two away, and Cuddyer brought two more home with a bases-loaded single.
Syndergaard, who lost his big league debut against the Cubs, originally showed pinpoint control by holding the Brewers to just one hit with one walk over the first five innings.
"Plus velocity, I didn't see a pitch under 95 (mph)," said Brewers managers Craig Counsell. "He sprinkled in his curveball just enough."
After giving up a leadoff single to Luis Sardinas, however, Syndergaard let a pitch get away from him, and Gomez turned just in time to avoid being hit in the face. The ball hit his left earflap and sent him face-first into the dirt. Gomez stayed on the ground and walked to the dugout under his own power after undergoing several tests. He suffered a facial contusion but no concussion.
Ryan Braun got the Brewers on the board with an RBI single, but Syndergaard stranded a pair and finished his outing with five strikeouts.
Jeurys Familia anchored a scoreless bullpen effort with a 1-2-3 ninth.
