Chicago, IL – The New York Mets announced prior to the start of a two-game set with the Chicago White Sox that the team has acquired outfielder Kyle Johnson from the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim in exchange for outfielder Collin Cowgill.
Johnson, 23, has spent the entire season with Single-A Burlington of the Midwest League. He batted .310 with two homers, 16 doubles, 30 RBI and 30 stolen bases over 68 games.
A 25th round selection of the Angels in 2012, Johnson owns a two-year minor league career average of .304 and has scored 58 runs over 100 games.
Cowgill, a Kentucky product and fifth-round pick of Arizona in 2008, had a promising spring for the Mets and made the Opening Day roster, starting in center field. However, the 27-year-old batted .180 with two homers and eight RBI over 23 games with the big league club this year and has not played in a game for the Mets since June 18.
Cowgill has appeared in 97 MLB games with the Diamondbacks and Oakland Athletics and Mets, hitting .237 with four home runs, 26 RBI and 70 strike outs. The Angels assigned him to Triple-A Salt Lake.
