Masterson eyes third win of year in opener with White Sox

Right-hander Justin Masterson goes for a third consecutive win to start the season on Friday night when the Chicago White Sox visit Progressive Field for the first of three weekend games with the Cleveland Indians.

A former second-round draft pick of the Boston Red Sox, Masterson won 11 times in 25 decisions across 34 starts in 2012 for the Indians, who acquired him and two other players from the Red Sox in July 2009 for catcher Victor Martinez.

He opened 2013 with six innings of three-hit, one-run ball in a 4-1 defeat of the Toronto Blue Jays, then upped his mark to 2-0 with seven shutout innings of two-hit ball in a 13-0 rout of Tampa Bay.

Masterson is 22-21 in 94 career appearances on home fields, with a 3.35 earned run average. Friday's game will be his first home start of 2013.

He squares off against Chicago lefty Jose Quintana, who makes his first career start against the Indians.

The 24-year-old native of Colombia was 6-6 in 25 appearances - 22 starts - for the White Sox as a rookie last season while posting a 3.76 ERA in 136 1/3 innings and allowing an opposition batting average of .275.

He got a no-decision in his first outing of 2013 on April 5, when he allowed five earned runs on eight hits in four innings.

Quintana was 3-2 in 12 appearances on the road last season.

On Thursday in Washington, Bryce Harper went 2-for-3 with two RBI and scored twice, and Ryan Zimmerman added a double and a pair of RBI as the Nationals completed a three-game sweep of the White Sox with a 7-4 win.

Alejandro De Aza had two hits, an RBI and scored once for the White Sox. Adam Dunn added an RBI double.

Dylan Axelrod (0-1) allowed six runs on seven hits over 3 2/3 innings to absorb the loss.

"You don't get many breaks (in the Nationals' lineup)," Axelrod said.

The Indians, meanwhile, haven't played since losing to the New York Yankees on Tuesday after back-to-back postponements.

The White Sox won 11 of 18 games between the teams last season. Cleveland last won the season series in 2007.
