Seattle Mariners minor league catcher Jesus Montero will be sidelined approximately 4-to-6 weeks with a torn meniscus in his left knee, general manager Jack Zduriencik announced on Saturday.

Montero, Seattle's Opening Day catcher who was demoted to Triple-A Tacoma on May 22, sustained the injury earlier this week and will undergo surgery on a date yet to be determined next week.

The 23-year-old hit 15 home runs with 62 RBI while batting .260 in his first full season in the majors last year, but was hitting just .208 with three homers in 29 games in 2013 prior to being sent down.

Montero had been regarded as one of baseball's top prospects when the former New York Yankees farmhand was traded to the Mariners in a four-player deal in January of 2012.
