Charleston, SC (SportsNetwork.com) - Second-seeded Russian Ekaterina Makarova was a three-set second-round winner Wednesday, but then withdrew from the ladies' Family Circle Cup tennis event, citing an gastrointestinal illness.

The left-hander came from behind to beat Chinese Zhang Shuai 5-7, 6-3, 6-2 on the clay courts at Family Circle Tennis Center. She felt stomach pain during the match and later decided it was best to get healthy for the remainder of the clay-court season.

The world No. 8 Makarova's third-round opponent was supposed to be Romanian Irina-Camelia Begu, who received a walkover into Friday's quarterfinals.

Meanwhile, fourth-seeded former French Open runner-up Sara Errani of Italy dismissed last year's Charleston runner-up Jana Cepelova 6-3, 7-6 (7-5) and Spaniard Lara Arruabarrena upset ninth-seeded 2010 Charleston champion and former U.S. Open titlist Sam Stosur 6-3, 3-6, 6-4.

The Slovakian Cepelova gave way to German Andrea Petkovic in last year's Family Circle finale.

Fifteenth-seeded German Mona Barthel erased inconsistent American Sloane Stephens 6-3, 7-6 (7-2).

In other action involving seeds, qualifier Danka Kovinic of Montenegro upended No. 12 Swiss teenager Belinda Bencic 4-6, 6-3, 6-2 and the aforementioned No. 13 Begu snuck past Kazakhstan's Yaroslava Shvedova 6-0, 6-7 (4-7), 6-4.

In matches involving unseeded Americans, Madison Brengle whipped Croat Donna Vekic 6-1, 6-3 and Spanish qualifier Sara Sorribes Tormo doused Shelby Rogers 7-5, 6-1. Brengle will face the defending champion Petkovic here on Thursday.

Also on Day 3, Romanian Andreea Mitu drubbed Croat Ajla Tomljanovic 6-2, 6-2.
