Real Madrid was frustrated again by Lyon in the Champions League and held to a 1-1 tie Tuesday night, but Chelsea put aside its troubles with a 2-0 victory at Copenhagen that moved the Blues closer to the quarterfinals.
Lyon's Bafetimbi Gomis tied the score in the 83rd minute in France, clipping the ball past goalkeeper Iker Casillas after Cris headed on a free kick. Karim Benzema had scored against his former club in the 65th, a minute after replacing Emmanuel Adebayor for visiting Real.
Benzema was mobbed by his teammates but refused to react to his goal against Lyon, the team he played for from 2004-09.
"I couldn't celebrate," he said. "Lyon was my team, I grew up here, and it's thanks to Lyon that I am at Real Madrid today."
Cristiano Ronaldo hit a post with a free kick in the 49th and Sergio Ramos hit the crossbar a minute later.
"I feel like I've taken part in a real Champions League game, a tough, hard-fought match with few chances," Real coach Jose Mourinho said through a translator.
The first-leg result in the second round improved Lyon's record in the competition against nine-time champion Real to 3-0-4. The Spanish club has failed to reach the quarterfinals since 2004.
"The satisfaction is having stood up to them and still being in with a chance for the second leg," Lyon coach Claude Puel said. "We still have the chance to qualify and that's the most important thing. We will need to be more clinical in the second leg."
Mourinho thought Madrid should have been awarded a penalty kick by German referee Wolfgang Stark early in the second half when Yoann Gourcuff appeared to block the ball with his arm while defending a free kick. Gourcuff seemed to be turning away.
"I'm 50 meters away and I can see it, but the referee doesn't spot it from 5 meters," Mourinho said. "I hope it isn't decisive for Real Madrid, but if it is how do you justify it?"
Nicolas Anelka scored twice for Chelsea, which has never won European soccer's top club prize. He intercepted a pass from Jesper Gronkjaer in midfield and drove toward the edge of the penalty area before beating goalkeeper Johan Wiland with a low shot in the 17th minute. Then in the 54th, Anelka scored on a half-volley following a pass from Frank Lampard.
Chelsea was eliminated from the FA Cup on Saturday and is fifth in the Premier League.
"You must be able to move quickly after a bad result. You must continue to stay focused," Chelsea manager Carlo Ancelotti said.
Ancelotti defended Fernando Torres, who has not scored since he was acquired from Liverpool last month for about $80 million.
"Torres was unlucky he didn't score but had a fantastic game," Ancelotti said.
The second legs of the total-goals series will be played March 16.
"We lost to a better team today," Copenhagen coach Stale Solbakken said. "We couldn't quite cope with their physique and the tempo was too high for us in periods. Too often we missed the last pass, and too often we made technical errors."
In the final first-leg matches Wednesday, defending champion Inter Milan hosts Bayern Munich in a rematch of last year's final and Manchester United is at Marseille.
In first-leg matches last week, Tottenham won 1-0 at AC Milan, Valencia tied visiting Schalke 1-1, Arsenal won 2-1 at home against Barcelona and Shakhtar Donetsk won 3-2 at Roma.

BLACKPOOL, England (AP) — Tottenham's grip on fourth place in the Premier League was loosened by a surprise 3-1 loss at Blackpool, which ended a six-game winless streak.
Blackpool captain Charlie Adam, who was close to joining Tottenham last month, converted a penalty kick in the 18th minute, and the Seasiders built a three-goal lead when DJ Campbell scored in the 44th and Brett Ormerod in the 80th. Roman Pavlyuchenko got a 90th-minute goal for Tottenham, whuch won 1-0 at AC Milan last week in the Champions League.
Tottenham (13-6-8) is two points ahead of fifth-place Chelsea (13-7-6). Blackpool (9-13-5) is 12th, five points clear of the relegation zone.

MOSCOW (AP) — Sergei Ignashevich scored on a rebound in the 80th minute after Vagner Love's penalty kick was stopped by goalkeeper Dario Kresic, and CSKA Moscow advanced to the third round of the Europa League with a 1-1 tie against PAOK Thessaloniki.
CSKA won the home-and-home, total-goals series on 2-1 aggregate.
Zlatan Muslimovic put PAOK ahead in the 67th after a mistake by CSKA backup goalkeeper Sergei Chepchugov. But Kresic fouled Tomas Tosic in the penalty area, leading to Love's kick.
