LSU junior cornerback Morris Claiborne has been named the winner of the 2011 Jim Thorpe Award, given each year to the nation's top defensive back.

Claiborne had six interceptions and returned one for a touchdown this season, adding 46 tackles -- 28 solo -- with six pass break-ups for the top-ranked Tigers.

Claiborne, who also had a 26.1-yard kickoff return average, beat out Mark Barron of Alabama and David Amerson of North Carolina State for the award.

LSU's Patrick Peterson won the award last season.
