Foxboro, MA (SportsNetwork.com) - The New England Patriots placed All-Pro tight end Rob Gronkowski on injured reserve Monday.
Gronkowski will miss the rest of the season with a right knee injury that has been reported as ACL and MCL tears. He was hurt in the third quarter of Sunday's wild 27-26 comeback win over Cleveland after catching a pass from Tom Brady up the seam. Gronkowski's right knee absorbed the brunt of a hit by Browns defensive back T.J. Ward.
The 24-year-old finished the 2013 season with 39 receptions for 592 yards and four touchdowns in just seven games. He missed the first six games of the campaign while recovering from offseason back and forearm surgeries.
The Patriots filled Gronkowski's roster spot by re-signing tight end D.J. Williams.
Williams was signed by New England on Nov. 27 and saw limited action in the Patriots' Week 13 win at Houston before being released on Wednesday.
