Geneva, Switzerland (SportsNetwork.com) - Andrey Golubev and Aleksandr Nedovyesov stunned Roger Federer and Stanislas Wawrinka in Saturday's doubles to give Kazakhstan an unlikely 2-1 lead over Switzerland in their best-of-five Davis Cup quarterfinal in Geneva.
The Kazakhs defeated the Swiss duo by a 6-4, 7-6 (7-5), 4-6, 7-6 (8-6) margin in a match that lasted almost three hours on the indoor hardcourt at Palexpo.
Golubev started Friday's opening singles rubbers with a 7-6 (7-5), 6-2, 3-6, 7-6 (7-5) victory over Wawrinka. But Federer claimed a straight-set victory over Mikhail Kukushkin in the Day 1 nightcap to even the best-of-five at 1-1.
In Sunday's reverse singles, Wawrinka is scheduled on court first against Kukushkin. Federer would follow against Golubev.
The Swiss are captained by Severin Luthi, while Kazakhstan is guided by Dias Doskarayev. The Kazakhs won the lone Davis Cup meeting between the two nations in Astana in 2010.
The winner in Geneva will meet the Great Britain-Italy victor in a semifinal in September.
