For the third time this weekend at Pocono Raceway a car spun off Turn 3 and made hard contact with the inside pit wall. Sunday's incident occurred on Lap 4 of the Windows 10 400 when Kasey Kahne's No. 5 Chevrolet lost control off the corner and slid quickly off the racing surface.
Kahne tried to correct his car, but made heavy contact with the pit wall with the left side of the car between Travis Kvapil's stall and AJ Allmendinger's stall. The contact sent crew member helmets flying through the air, but it appeared no one on pit road was injured.
The contact also lodged a significant piece of Kahne's car into the pit wall, which was also broken from the impact. NASCAR put out the red flag to repair the damaged pit wall.
"I just got loose," Kahne said after walking from the infield care center. "It was a late exit, a lot later than I would have expected. That's why I ended up so far down pit road. That was kind of crazy; I've never ended up down there. I just got loose and basically spun and that was it."
Kahne said as he was spinning he was trying to avoid hitting the wall separating the track from pit road, and ended up hitting the inside pit wall instead.
"I saw the people and was like, 'Man, you guys better take off running and get out of the way.' I didn't know," Kahne said. "I haven't done anything like that before. It's crazy how it all happened."
Kahne's incident was the third of the weekend in which a vehicle slid off the track and made contact with the pit wall. During Saturday's morning practice session, Sprint Cup rookie Jeb Burton lost control of his No. 26 Toyota and hit the inside pit wall. During Saturday's Camping World Truck Series race, Ray Black Jr. had a similar incident where he hit the pit wall.
