New York, NY – New York Jets running back Mike Goodson finally returned to the team Monday, only to receive a four-game suspension from the NFL for violating the league Policy and Program for Substances of Abuse.
Goodson has missed all of training camp while dealing with an offseason legal matter, in which he was arrested on May 17 on drug possession and weapon charges.
At the time of the incident, Goodson was in the passenger seat of a car and was found carrying a small amount of marijuana along with a loaded .45-caliber semi-automatic handgun.
The Jets released the following statement: "Mike Goodson returned to the team today after taking time away to focus on a personal matter. While we welcome Mike back to the organization, we have had direct conversations to make our expectations very clear as we work together to help him move forward in a positive manner, both on and off the field. During his suspension, Mike will be permitted to attend meetings and condition on an individual basis at our practice facility. However, he will not be permitted to practice or play."
New York signed Goodson as a free agent just two days prior to the incident, agreeing to a reported three-year, $6.9 million contract with the former Oakland Raider running back.
"I've been away from the team to take care of some important personal things," said Goodson. "The time was helpful to me and now that I am back, I am going to do everything I can to contribute to the team. I appreciate all of the support from the Jets organization and I'm thankful to be back with my teammates."
Goodson has been placed on the active/non-football injury/illness list and will be eligible to return to the Jets' active roster on Monday, September 30 following the team's Week 4 contest with the Tennessee Titans.
