New York Jets defensive back Eric Smith avoided another suspension, but couldn't avoid a $7,500 fine from the NFL for his hit on Patriots receiver Wes Welker last Sunday, the New York Post reported Saturday.

The veteran was docked for what the league decreed was a helmet-to-helmet shot on Welker in the first half that drew an immediate 15-yard personal foul penalty.

Smith has been in the league's sights since 2008, when he was suspended one game and fined $50,000 by the NFL for a helmet-to-helmet hit on the Cardinals' Anquan Boldin that fractured Boldin's face, while giving Smith a concussion.

The fine for the latest hit by Smith came despite Welker saying he didn't consider it dirty and Jets coach Rex Ryan questioning Welker's onfield reaction by saying on Monday: "Wes wasn't hurt."
