The New York Yankees officially placed shortstop Derek Jeter, first baseman Mark Texieira, center fielder Curtis Granderson and pitcher Phil Hughes on the 15-day disabled list on Sunday.

All four players were placed retroactive to March 22.

Jeter, 38, is out due to a sore left ankle. He fractured his ankle in Game 1 of the American League Championship Series against the Detroit Tigers last fall. He will miss Opening Day for the first time since 2001.

Teixeira, who turns 33 on April 11, has been suffering from a right wrist injury since March 6 and is expected to be out until either late May or early June.

Granderson, 32, was hit by a pitch against the Blue Jays on Feb. 24 and fractured his right forearm. The Yankees were planning on moving him to left field this season, but is now slated to return to center once he is ready to play. He is expected to miss six weeks.

Hughes, 26, has a bulging disc in his upper spine. He has not suffered any setbacks, though, and has been pitching in the minor leagues. He could make his season debut around April 11.

In addition, the Yankees have designated pitcher Clay Rapada for assignment and selected the contract of first baseman Lyle Overbay from Scranton/Wilkes- Barre.
