Sunderland, England (SportsNetwork.com) - Adnan Januzaj marked his first Premier League start with a brace as his second-half double handed Manchester United a 2-1 victory over Sunderland at the Stadium of Light on Saturday.
Craig Gardner gave Sunderland the lead in just the fifth minute of play when he pounced on a failed clearance from Nemanja Vidic and hammered a first-time effort past David De Gea.
The Black Cats bossed the remainder of the opening period, but a well-worked move down the left flank in the 55th minute saw United equalize. Januzaj released Patrice Evra before taking the return pass and slotting a low cross just inside Kieren Westwood's near post.
Januzaj gave United the lead six minutes later through a moment of sheer brilliance. A cross from the right side was headed away by the Sunderland defense, but only as far as Januzaj. The 18-year-old timed his effort to perfection as he uncorked a first-time, left-footed volley that nestled into the bottom corner, leaving Westwood with no chance.
The win snaps a two-game slide for the Red Devils, bringing the reigning champions to 10 points on the season.
Sunderland has lost five Premier League matches on the bounce to remain bottom on just one point.
Manchester City 3, Everton 1
Manchester, England - Manchester City handed Everton its first defeat of the Premier League season as the Citizens ran out to a 3-1 victory at the Etihad on Saturday.
Romelu Lukaku had given visiting Everton the lead in the 16th minute with a low shot past Joe Hart, but City got back on equal terms a minute later through Alvaro Negredo.
The home side went in front just before halftime when Sergio Aguero latched on to a through ball and fired a low shot past Tim Howard, and things went from bad to worse for the American goalkeeper as his own goal in the 69th minute sealed Everton's fate.
Manchester City improves to 13 points on the season to move one point clear of Everton.
Liverpool 3, Crystal Palace 1
Liverpool, England - Liverpool climbed to the top of the Premier League table on Saturday thanks to a 3-1 victory over Crystal Palace at Anfield.
Luis Suarez got the Reds off the mark in the 13th minute by poking a shot into the back of the net while falling to ground and Daniel Sturridge doubled Liverpool's advantage four minutes later through a brilliant solo effort on the left flank that concluded with the England international hammering home a left-footed strike from a tough angle. Steven Gerrard completed the first-half scoring by converting a penalty kick just seven minutes before the break.
Dwight Gayle pulled one back for Palace in the 76th minute when he nodded home a set piece from a tough angle, but it did not spark a comeback for the visitors.
Liverpool has claimed 16 points through seven matches to leave the Reds in first place, albeit until Arsenal's trip to West Bromwich Albion on Sunday. Crystal Palace has lost four straight to remain on three points.
Newcastle 2, Cardiff City 1
Cardiff, Wales - Loic Remy produced a first-half brace to lead Newcastle to a 2-1 victory at Cardiff City on Saturday.
Remy scored twice in the span of eight minutes, opening the his account in the 30th minute before adding to Newcastle's advantage just before the break. Peter Odemwingie pulled one back for Cardiff, but the Magpies were able to stave off some late pressure from the home side to collect all three points.
Newcastle snaps a two-game slide to improve to 10 points on the season, two points better than Cardiff.
Fulham 1, Stoke City 0
London, England - Darren Bent provided the lone goal in Fulham's 1-0 win over Stoke City at Craven Cottage on Saturday.
Bent entered the match as Dimitar Berbatov's substitute but went on to make a lasting impact as his 83rd-minute goal held up as the winner.
Fulham get its second win of the season to improve to seven points, bringing the club level with the Potters, who have lost three straight.
Hull City 0, Aston Villa 0
Hull, England - Hull City and Aston Villa shared the spoils at the KC Stadium on Saturday as the two sides played to a 0-0 draw.
Scoring chances were at a premium throughout the match as neither side managed to break the deadlock.
The two clubs remain separated by a single point as Hull City climbs to 11 points to sit one spot above Villa in the table.
