SYDNEY – Three-time Olympic rowing gold medalist James Tomkins has been chosen as Australia's candidate for the next election of members to the International Olympic Committee's Athletes' Commission.
Tomkins was chosen in a secret ballot Wednesday by the Australian Olympic Committee Athletes' Commission and was endorsed by the AOC Executive to become their joint candidate.
He will now be put forward to the IOC Executive Board for confirmation of eligibility. The election of four athletes from four different sports for the IOC Athlete's Commission will be held in London next year, with athletes competing in the 2012 Games eligible to vote.
Tomkins, 45, competed at the 1988, 1992, 1996, 2000, 2004 and 2008 Olympics. He won gold in 1992, 1996 and 2004 as a member of the "Oarsome Foursome" coxless four team.
