Isles place Gillies, Niederreiter on IR
{{#rendered}} {{/rendered}}The New York Islanders placed enforcer Trevor Gillies and forward Nino Niederreiter on injured reserve Monday.
The moves are retroactive to September 30.
Gillies posted just two goals and was a minus-3 in 39 games for the Islanders last season, but his impact was nonetheless apparent as he racked up 165 penalty minutes.
{{#rendered}} {{/rendered}}He was given lengthy suspensions on two occasions, both for questionable actions against an opponent, and fined almost $85,000 for his efforts.
Niederreiter, 25, posted a goal and two points in nine games a season ago, his first NHL action. The native of Switzerland was the fifth-overall selection in the 2010 draft.
The Isles begin their 2011-12 season by hosting Florida this Saturday.
