The New York Islanders placed goaltender Rick DiPietro on injured reserve Thursday.

The move is retroactive to December 3, when the oft-injured DiPietro suffered a left groin strain at Dallas. The 30-year-old is out indefinitely.

DiPietro, the first overall selection by the Islanders in 2000 out of Boston University, is 3-2-3 with a 3.73 goals-against average and .876 save percentage in eight games this season.

New York will host the Dallas Stars tonight at Nassau Coliseum.
