The Carolina Hurricanes have re-signed defenseman Derek Joslin to a two-year, $1.4 million contract.

"Derek is a young defenseman who played well after joining the Hurricanes last year," Carolina GM Jim Rutherford said. "He has now put himself in a position to be a full-time NHL player."

Joslin, 24, played in a career-high 34 NHL games in 2010-11, splitting the season between San Jose and Carolina after being acquired by the Hurricanes via trade on Feb. 18. In his 17 games with Carolina, he had 1 goal and 5 points while compiling a plus-7 rating, while averaging 18:03 of ice time per game.

The Richmond Hill, Ont., native made his NHL debut with the Sharks on Jan. 3, 2009, and has scored 2 goals and compiled 12 points in 70 career NHL regular-season games. San Jose took the 6-foot-1, 210-pound Joslin in the fifth round of the 2005 Entry Draft.
