Hunter-Reay penalized in 1st practice at Edmonton

EDMONTON, Alberta – IndyCar Series points leader Ryan Hunter-Reay has been penalized for unsportsmanlike conduct.

Hunter-Reay was parked for the final few minutes of Friday's first practice at Edmonton for running James Jakes off course.

Jakes had slowed going into Turn 12 in front of Hunter-Reay, and Hunter-Reay responded by moving his car over and forcing Jakes off track. Hunter-Reay then flashed an obscene gesture at Jakes.

Hunter-Reay has won the past three IndyCar Series races and takes a 34-point lead over Will Power into Sunday's race. He's the first American driver since 2006 to lead the series standings.

Simon Pagenaud was fastest in the first practice. He was followed by Mike Conway, Justin Wilson, Graham Rahal and Josef Newgarden.

Alex Tagliani had a small spin during the first practice, but did not damage his car.
