Howard leads Everton to 2-1 upset at Man City

MANCHESTER, England – Tim Howard made a series of outstanding saves in the second half, helping Everton to a 2-1 upset win at Manchester City on Monday night that prevented the hosts from taking what would have been their first league lead at Christmas since 1929.

Howard tipped away a free kick from Aleksander Kolarov in the first half. Then in the 77th, Mario Balotelli's clipped shot off a Yaya Toure pass richocheted off a post to Carlos Tevez, and Howard made an outstanding block. Howard also saved a shot from David Silva in the 89th.

"He's been the man, not just this season but all the other seasons, as well," Everton's Tim Cahill said. "There's times in games when we look to him to get us out of it, and tonight he did that."

Cahill scored off a pass from Seamus Coleman in the fourth minute and Leighton Baines doubled the lead in the 19th for the Toffees, who overcame the 60th minute-ejection of Victor Anichebe for his second yellow card. Manchester City's Pablo Zabaleta was off the field for the second goal while receiving four stitches in his head following a collision with Cahill,

Everton's Phil Jagielka had an own goal in the 72nd minute, and Toure was sent off for a pair of yellow cards in second-half injury time.

Manchester City (9-4-5) has 32 points, two behind Premier League leader Manchester United (9-0-7), and it trails Arsenal (10-5-2) on goal difference.

"We have to understand that we can't sleep when we play this game," Manchester City manager Roberto Mancini said. "Then, maybe we can go to the top in the future."

With its second road win of the season, Everton (4-5-9) moved to 14th,

"There's a big smile tonight. I feel terrific," Everton manager David Moyes said after his team's third straight win at Eastlands. "I thought the players did me proud tonight, the way they kept at it."

Before the game, Manchester City announced Tevez had withdrawn his transfer request.

Hercules (5-7-4), promoted this season, is in 12th place, six points clear of the relegation zone and one point above 14th-place Racing (5-8-3).
