PITTSBURGH (AP) — Jets wide receiver Santonio Holmes acknowledged taking missteps during his four-season Steelers career, but said in a message on his website he is looking forward to a "clean start" with his new team.
The former Ohio State player was held out for one game by the Steelers in 2008 after police said they detected marijuana in his car. He was recently sued by a woman in Florida who said he threw a glass at her in a nightclub.
There also were a series of messages on Holmes' Twitter account this spring that embarrassed the Steelers, including one in which he suggested a fan kill himself.
"I have made some mistakes in my past that I am not proud of, but the most important thing is that I have learned from them," Holmes said.
Holmes was recently cast off by the Steelers for a fifth-round draft pick. In his message, he said he knows the Jets acquired him so he can help them win a Super Bowl.
"The 2010 season is going to be a great one. I know the reason (general manager) Mike Tannenbaum, coach (Rex) Ryan and (owner Woody) Johnson brought me to this team is to help win a Super Bowl and I plan on helping them accomplish that goal," Holmes said.
Holmes, the MVP of the Steelers' Super Bowl victory over Arizona in February 2009, called his time in Pittsburgh "memorable" and thanked Jets fans for welcoming him.
"God has given me the opportunity to make a clean start and I am really excited about moving forward in a positive direction," Holmes said.
