A high school football player in upstate New York has died after he suffered a head injury during a game.

School officials say the fatal injury occurred Friday night during a game in Homer, south of Syracuse. A player on the visiting team from Phoenix High School was taken to a hospital after being hurt in the third quarter. He later died of his injuries.

Phoenix School District Superintendent Judy Belfield says the student was a junior. His name hasn't been released yet.

Belfield says the boy was able to sit up after the play, but he complained of a very bad headache, then collapsed when he tried to stand.

She says coaches didn't learn until after the game that his injuries were severe.
