San Jose, CA – Lleyton Hewitt was a first-round winner at the SAP Open.
The former world No. 1 Lleyton Hewitt snuck into the second round by getting past Slovenian Blaz Kavcic, 3-6, 6-4, 7-6 (7-4). Hewitt titled here in 2002 and was the San Jose runner-up in 2006.
The two-time Grand Slam champion Hewitt will face third-seeded Sam Querrey in his next outing at HP Pavilion.
Tim Smyczek upset the fifth seed Fernando Verdasco 6-3, 6-3. Verdasco titled here in 2010 and was the runner-up in 2011.
No. 6 seed Denis Istomin was a 6-3, 6-4 winner over Ryan Sweeting. Istomin was last year's San Jose runner-up to Milos Raonic
The top-seeded Raonic is on hand as the two-time reigning champion this week. He has yet to lose a match at this event (8-0).
Also on Day 2, Vasek Pospisil downed Evgeny Donskoy 7-5, 6-1, No. 7 seed Marinko Matosevic beat Jack Sock 7-6 (8-6), 6-1 and Benjamin Becker took out Ryan Harrison.
The second seed this week is 6-foot-9 American John Isner, who will face the aforementioned Pospisil in the round of 16.
This long-time California event will move to Memphis next year. And after moving to Memphis in 2014, the tournament will then shift to Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
The 2013 San Jose titlist will collect $98,700.
