Harvey tries to bounce back against Cubs

(SportsNetwork.com) - Matt Harvey tries to bounce back from his first loss of the season on Wednesday when the New York Mets resume a four-game set with the Chicago Cubs at Wrigley Field.

Harvey had won his first five starts before falling to the lowly Philadelphia Phillies on Friday. The hard-throwing right-hander gave up three runs and six hits in six innings of that one and saw his ERA rise a tick to 2.72.

"I needed to put up zeros tonight, and I didn't do that," Harvey said after the loss. "(I have) got to go back to square one and get back to where I was. Tomorrow I just begin to get ready for my next start."

Harvey beat the Cubs the only other time he faced them, as he held them to a pair of runs in 7 1/3 innings.

Chicago, meanwhile, will counter with righty Jason Hammel, who has won his last two decisions. Hammel beat the Milwaukee Brewers on Friday, limiting them to a pair of runs and five hits over seven innings. He also struck out eight batters and ran his record to 3-1 to go along with a 3.52 ERA.

Hammel has never beaten the Mets, going 0-3 with a 6.33 ERA in four starts against them.

On Tuesday, Jake Arrieta tossed eight solid innings to help Chicago spoil Noah Syndergaard's major-league debut with a 6-1 victory.

Arrieta (4-3) bounced back from dropping his last two starts to surrender just one run on three hits and two walks with a season-high 10 strikeouts.

"You have to pitch well to beat good pitching. (Arrieta) was outstanding," Cubs manager Joe Maddon said

Kris Bryant finished 3-for-4 with a triple and a homer, while Starlin Castro doubled twice, scored twice and drove in a run for the Cubs, who have won the first two of this four-game set.

Syndergaard (0-1), regarded as the Mets' top prospect and ranked 11th on the MLB.com's 2015 prospect list, allowed three runs on six hits and four walks, He recorded six strikeouts over 5 1/3 frames.

"I'm not going to lie, I was really nervous ... From the first pitch on I felt really good out there," Syndergaard said.

The Cubs won five of seven versus the Mets last season, sweeping a three-game set at home.
