St. Louis, MO – The St. Louis Cardinals placed outfielder Matt Holliday on the 15-day disabled list on Saturday because of a lingering hamstring injury.
Holliday has sat out the Cardinals' last four games, including Friday's opener against the San Diego Padres, after pulling his right hamstring while running out a ground ball against the Chicago Cubs on July 11.
The Cardinals were hopeful Holliday could avoid the disabled list, but the 33- year-old continued to feel tightness in the affected area while participating in running tests on Friday.
Holliday has posted a .268 batting average with 13 homers and 47 RBI in 83 games for the Cardinals this season.
The move is retroactive to July 12 and the Cardinals will fill the roster spot by purchasing the contract of Brock Peterson from Triple-A Memphis.
Peterson, 29, will make his major league debut. He was leading the Pacific Coast League with 22 home runs and 66 RBI while batting for a .306 average with Memphis this season.
