Istanbul, Turkey (SportsNetwork.com) - Fifth seed Andreas Haider-Maurer suffered a first-round upset Tuesday at the inaugural Istanbul Open.
Capable Croat Ivan Dodig dismissed the Austrian Haider-Maurer 7-5, 6-3 on the red clay at Koza World of Sports Arena.
Two other seeds avoided upsets, as No. 6 Mikhail Kukushkin handled qualifier and fellow Kazakhstani Aleksandr Nedovyesov 6-3, 6-4 and No. 8 Diego Schwartzman of Argentina blitzed Slovenian qualifier Blaz Kavcic 6-2, 6-1 on Day 2.
Several other men reached the second round, including Uzbekistan's Denis Istomin, Austrian veteran Jurgen Melzer, Finland's Jarkko Nieminen, and Spaniard Daniel Gimeno-Traver, who was a recent runner-up in Casablanca.
On Wednesday, top-seeded former world No. 1 great Roger Federer will take to the courts for a second-round match against Nieminen. The Swiss icon is 14-0 lifetime versus Nieminen.
