Georgia Southern football coach Jeff Monken said Tuesday his team will begin the season by using two quarterbacks.

Neither sophomore Ezayi Youyoute nor junior Jerick McKinnon separated himself in preseason camp. The defending Southern Conference champion Eagles are replacing two-year starter Jaybo Shaw.

"The starting quarterback is the same guy as the backup quarterback," Monken said. "Those two guys are going to be our quarterback. I don't know which one is going to be the first one to trot out there (Saturday against Jacksonville), but I imagine whichever one is the quarterback the first play, the other one will play another position."

McKinnon was a backup quarterback last season, but also started at slotback, wide receiver and defensive back in Georgia Southern's four playoff games.

He played in 13 games, starting seven, and rushed for 537 yards and seven touchdowns. He completed 3-of-6 passes for 37 yards and picked off two passes in four games at defensive back.

Youyoute rushed for 310 yards and completed 4-of-6 passes for 35 yards last season.

Kickoff for Jacksonville at No. 3 Georgia Southern is 6 p.m. ET.
