E-mails released this week indicated that the safety of lugers on the track was the source of debate for organizers and international luge officials for years.

Nodar Kumaritashvili died when he lost control of his sled at nearly 90 mph, flew off the course and slammed into a steel pole hours before the opening of the 2010 Olympics.
