Calgary, AB (SportsNetwork.com) - The Calgary Flames have placed defenseman Mark Giordano on injured reserve because of undisclosed upper body injury.

Giordano was hurt during the third period of Wednesday's game against New Jersey after taking a hit from Devils forward Steve Bernier. He took part in the pregame skate prior to Friday's contest against the New York Islanders, but did not play.

The Flames' captain has 11 goals and 37 assists for a career-high 48 points in 61 games this season. He is tied with Montreal's P.K. Subban for the scoring lead among defensemen in the league this season.

Calgary added depth to its blue line Sunday by claiming defenseman David Schlemko off waivers from Dallas.

Schlemko appeared in 20 games with Arizona this season, then joined Dallas and played five games for the Stars before being waived on Saturday. He has one goal and three assists this season.
