ARLINGTON, Texas – Doug McDermott is enjoying the spoils of the Final Four as the winner of three player of the year awards in two days.
The national scoring leader from Creighton even has some of his teammates in North Texas with him. But not all of them.
"This is obviously a dream of mine, to be able to play in the Final Four, and it didn't happen," McDermott said while accepting the U.S. Basketball Writers Association honor that bears Oscar Robertson's name. "We can't let that affect what we did in our four years."
McDermott also picked up the Wooden Award Friday. On Thursday, he won The Associated Press Player of the Year award.
Creighton fell in the third round to Baylor, ending McDermott's celebrated career as the game's fifth-leading scorer. But he's enjoying the moment nonetheless.
On Thursday night, he watched teammate Ethan Wragge in a 3-point shooting contest at SMU. The pesky Bears got the Bluejays there, too. Baylor's Brady Heslip was the men's winner.
"It's cool to be here," said McDermott, who picked up the Wooden Award as the nation's top player later Friday in Fort Worth. "Obviously we'd love to play in it, but it is cool enough just being here."
