STATE COLLEGE, Pa. – Three days into training camp, junior college transfer Tyler Ferguson has a slight edge on touted freshman Christian Hackenberg in the Penn State quarterback race.
That doesn't necessarily mean it's going to stay that way once Penn State kicks off the season Aug. 31 against Syracuse at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey.
Coach Bill O'Brien said Thursday that Ferguson might be a "little ahead" because he has more knowledge in the offense.
Ferguson arrived in Happy Valley in January and practiced in the spring. Hackenberg is only taking his first practice snaps now as a freshman.
They're vying to replace Matt McGloin, who set records last season in O'Brien's first season with the Nittany Lions.
The coaches are generally happy with how Ferguson and Hackenberg have performed so far in practice.
