Federer, Wawrinka advance in Toronto

Toronto, ON (SportsNetwork.com) - Roger Federer and Stan Wawrinka were second- round winners Tuesday at the Rogers Cup, a Masters 1000 tournament.

Federer, the No. 2 seed, cruised past Peter Polansky of Canada by a 6-2, 6-0 margin at Rexall Centre.

Federer is making his first appearance since a five-set loss to Novak Djokovic in the Wimbledon final. The Swiss superstar is a two-time Rogers Cup champ and two-time runner-up.

The third-seeded Wawrinka rallied past Frenchman Benoit Paire 4-6, 6-3, 7-6 (7-2) on the hardcourts at this U.S. Open Series event.

In opening-round action involving seeds on Day 2, No. 11 Latvian Ernests Gulbis grounded Portuguese Joao Sousa 6-3, 6-4; No. 12 Frenchman Richard Gasquet vanquished last week's Washington, D.C., runner-up Vasek Pospisil of Canada 7-5, 7-5; No. 16 Italian Fabio Fognini discarded Russian Mikhail Youzhny 6-4, 6-3; and No. 17 Spaniard Tommy Robredo defeated German Philipp Kohlschreiber 6-3, 7-6 (7-3).

Gasquet was the 2006 and 2012 runner-up in Montreal.

American wild card Jack Sock whipped Austrian veteran Jurgen Melzer 6-1, 6-3, while rising Aussie Nick Kyrgios topped Colombian Santiago Giraldo 7-6 (7-3), 7-5 and American Donald Young overcame Canadian wild card Frank Dancevic 5-7, 6-0, 6-3 to reach the second round. The wild card Kyrgios will meet British star Andy Murray in his next outing.

Other first-round winners were France's Gael Monfils and Gilles Simon, Italian Andreas Seppi, Taiwan's Yen-Hsun Lu, Tunisian lucky loser Malek Jaziri and Ivo Karlovic of Croatia.

The top seed this week is three-time champion Djokovic, who will face the former top-10 star Monfils in his opener.

Rafael Nadal beat Canada's own Milos Raonic in last year's final in Montreal, as this tournament shifts between Toronto and Montreal each year. An injured Nadal is not defending his title this week. Raonic will meet Sock in the second round this week in a rematch of a second-rounder in Washington, D.C., last week, which was won by Raonic.

The winner of this $3.145 million event will earn $600,000.
