Ex-Auburn star Dyer headed to Louisville

Little Rock, AR – Michael Dyer, who helped Auburn to a BCS national championship as a freshman before having a promising career sidetracked by a number of off-field issues, has decided to transfer to Louisville for the upcoming 2013 season.

Dyer made the announcement in a statement released by Arkansas Baptist College, where the prized running back spent the past academic year away from football after being dismissed from Arkansas State following an arrest in March of 2012.

"I am ready to start a new chapter in my life," said Dyer in the statement.

The 22-year-old came to Auburn as one of the nation's most heralded recruits in 2010 and rushed for 1,093 yards with five touchdowns during his freshman season, which he capped with a 22-carry, 143-yard performance to earn offensive MVP honors in the Tigers' 22-19 win over Oregon in the BCS Championship Game.

Dyer then earned first team All-SEC honors as a sophomore after putting up 1,242 rushing yards and 10 touchdowns, but Auburn released him from his scholarship following the 2011 season due to reported failed drug tests.

The Little Rock native subsequently transferred to Arkansas State, where former Tigers offensive coordinator Gus Mahlzahn had just been named head coach. Dyer never played a game for the Red Wolves, though, as Mahlzahn dismissed him from the program last summer after Arkansas State police confiscated a handgun and marijuana from Dyer's vehicle when being pulled over and charged with speeding.

"I've learned from my past and feel that Louisville is the best place to play the second half of my collegiate career," Dyer continued. "I thank God for (Louisville) Coach (Charlie) Strong's belief in me. I am not going to let him down."

Having sat out all of last year while earning an associates degree at Arkansas Baptist, Dyer will be immediately eligible to play for Louisville, which is coming off an 11-2 season capped by a victory over Florida in the Sugar Bowl. The Cardinals are ranked ninth overall in the preseason USA Today coaches poll.
