PORT ELIZABETH (Reuters) - England have brought in striker Jermain Defoe to liven up their dismal attack for Wednesday's World Cup Group C match against leaders Slovenia who are unchanged from the side that drew with the United States.

Defoe comes in at the expense of the ineffective Emile Heskey to join Wayne Rooney in attack. James Milner replaces Aaron Lennon in midfield for a game England need to win to qualify without relying on the result of the other group match.

Matthew Upson will partner John Terry in central defense with Jamie Carragher suspended and Ledley King ruled out through injury. Talented midfielder Joe Cole, who was tipped by British media to start the match, remains on the bench.

Slovenia defender Marko Suler starts after recovering from bruised ribs sustained in the 2-2 draw with the U.S. Reserve striker Nejc Pecnik is out of the finals with a broken ankle.
