PHOENIX (AP) — Justin Upton, Adam LaRoche and Mark Reynolds homered off struggling A.J. Burnett in the first inning and the Arizona Diamondbacks went on to beat the New York Yankees 10-4 on Monday night in the opener of their three-game interleague series.
Upton, who added a three-run homer in the eighth, reached base five times, had four RBIs and scored four runs.
Miguel Montero was 3 for 4 with a double and two RBIs as the Diamondbacks won at home for the 11th time in 16 games. They have lost 14 of 15 on the road.
Burnett (6-6) gave up seven runs and nine hits in four innings with no strikeouts and two walks. He has allowed 23 runs, including nine homers, in 20 innings in losing his last four starts. The 33-year-old right-hander failed to make it past four innings for the second straight start and is 2-6 after opening the season a career-best 4-0.
Rodrigo Lopez (3-6) gave up three runs and eight hits in eight innings for his first victory since May 15. He was 0-4 in his previous six starts.
Upton, who also singled, walked and was hit by a pitch, had his third career two-homer game and first since May 20, 2009.
The Yankees, opening a six-game interleague trip to the West with their second regular-season visit to Arizona since their seven-game World Series loss to the Diamondbacks in 2001, got a run-scoring triple and sacrifice fly from Nick Swisher.
Alex Rodriguez had an RBI double in front of 47,229, Arizona's second-largest home crowd of the season. About half of them cheered for New York. Brett Gardner was 4 for 4 with two infield singles and a bunt single for the Yankees.
New York gave up 10 runs for the third time this season and dropped to 18-17 on the road. The Yankees' AL East lead fell to a half-game over idle Tampa Bay and Boston.
All seven runs off Burnett came after he had retired Kelly Johnson and Stephen Drew to start the first, second and fourth innings.
Solo shots by Upton and Reynolds were sandwiched around LaRoche's three-run homer in Arizona's five-run first.
Upton hit a 1-1 pitch onto the porch in right-center, then Montero and Chris Young singled. LaRoche hit the first pitch he saw over the swimming pool in right field, a three-run shot that made it 4-0. Reynolds lined a 1-1 pitch into the left field seats for his 17th homer and Arizona led 5-0.
In the second, Upton singled, then on a hit-and-run play, scored on Montero's double to deep left-center to put Arizona ahead 6-0.
The Yankees got one in the third when Brett Gardner led of with a single, then scored on Swisher's two-out triple high off the center field wall. The Diamondbacks got their final run off Burnett in the third when Upton drew a two-out walk, stole second and scored on Montero's single.
New York cut it to 7-3 in the sixth. Mark Teixeira led off with a single and scored on Rodriguez's double. Rodriguez advanced on a groundout, then scored on Jorge Posada's sacrifice fly.
Gerardo Parra and Johnson singled to set the stage for Upton's home run into the left field seats on a 3-2 pitch.
