Philadelphia, PA (SportsNetwork.com) - The Philadelphia Eagles, apparently close to a deal with NFL rushing champion DeMarco Murray, announced Thursday they have agreed to terms on a three-year contract with veteran running back Ryan Mathews.
With reports swirling that Chip Kelly and the Eagles were about to sign Murray away from the Dallas Cowboys, the team confirmed earlier reports that it had locked up Mathews.
The Eagles, of course, were in the market for a running back after trading LeSean McCoy to the Buffalo Bills this week.
Mathews appeared poised to be McCoy's replacement, but might have to settle for a backup role if Murray also signs. The 27-year-old has spent each of his five NFL seasons with the San Diego Chargers, who drafted him No. 12 overall in 2010.
He had two 1,000-yard seasons with San Diego, in 2011 and 2013, but rushed for just 330 yards and three touchdowns in six games last season while dealing with knee and ankle injuries.
Mathews has gained 4,061 yards and scored 23 rushing touchdowns in 60 career games.
