The Scottish Premier League has invited Dundee to fill the 'Club 12' spot this season after newco Rangers were placed into Division Three following a vote last week.

A liquidation of the old Rangers club and the subsequent decision to place the newco team in the bottom tier of the Scottish Football League opened up a place in the top flight, which was expected to be filled by either Dunfermline, which finished last in the SPL last season, or Dundee, who ended last term in second place in the Scottish First Division.

But after a meeting on Monday, it has been decided that Dundee will fill the spot.

An SPL statement read: "It was agreed that the SPL would work with the Scottish FA, SFL and Rangers to facilitate Rangers FC taking their place in SFL Division 3 this season.

"It was agreed that Dundee FC would be invited to fill the space vacated by Rangers FC in the Clydesdale Bank Premier League."

Dundee will open its SPL campaign on Aug. 4 at Kilmarnock.
