Djokovic breezes in Montreal Masters second round

Montreal, QC – Two-time reigning and three-time overall champion Novak Djokovic was an easy winner of his second-round match Tuesday at the $2.887 million Rogers Cup tennis event.

The world No. 1 Djokovic needed just 55 minutes to dispose of overmatched German Florian Mayer 6-2, 6-1 on the hardcourts at this Masters 1000 tournament.

No. 7 seed Richard Gasquet, the runner-up at this event last year, also had little trouble in his second-round bout with Martin Klizan, with the Frenchman cruising to a 6-3, 6-2 victory in 84 minutes at Stade Uniprix.

Djokovic beat Gasquet in last year's final in Toronto, as this tournament shifts between Montreal and Toronto each year.

Ninth-seeded Kei Nishikori also advanced to the third round on Tuesday, with the Japanese native rallying for a 4-6, 7-5, 6-1 decision over Italian Andreas Seppi.

In opening-round action involving seeds, 10th-seeded German Tommy Haas downed Belgian qualifier David Goffin 7-6 (7-4), 6-3, 11th-seeded Canadian Milos Raonic outlasted France's Jeremy Chardy 6-3, 4-6, 7-5, Czech veteran Radek Stepanek upended No. 12 Spaniard Nicolas Almagro 6-3, 6-7 (4-7), 6-3, No. 13 Italian Fabio Fognini came back to whip Cypriot Marcos Baghdatis 1-6, 6-1, 6-1, Russian Nikolay Davydenko upset 14th-seeded Frenchman Gilles Simon 2-6, 6-1, 6-1 and No. 15 Jerzy Janowicz of Poland overcame Frenchman Julien Benneteau 3-6, 6-3, 7-5.

Meanwhile, promising Canadian slugger Vasek Pospisil, a wild card this week, took out 6-foot-9 American John Isner, 5-7, 7-6 (7-5), 7-6 (7-4), in 2 1/2 hours. The massive-serving affair featured 40 aces, including 24 by the towering Isner, who was last week's runner-up in Washington, D.C.

Additional first-round wins came for Spaniard Marcel Granollers, Russians Mikhail Youzhny and qualifier Alex Bogomolov Jr., Ukrainian Alexandr Dolgopolov and Canadian wild cards Frank Dancevic and Filip Peliwo.

Granollers was last week's surprise titlist in Kitzbuhel.

This week's big winner will earn $547,300.
