Phoenix, AZ (SportsNetwork.com) - The Arizona Diamondbacks activated infielder Cliff Pennington from the 15-day disabled list prior to Wednesday's game against the Kansas City Royals.

Pennington, out since June 1 with a sprained ligament in his left thumb that required surgery, will bat second and play third base in Wednesday's matchup.

The veteran switch-hitter was hitting .243 with six RBI in 34 games prior to being shelved.

Pitcher Bo Schultz was optioned to Triple-A Reno to create an opening on Arizona's active roster.
