Phoenix, AZ – The Arizona Diamondbacks and Paul Goldschmidt have officially agreed to a five-year contract extension.
The Arizona Republic reported that the deal will pay Goldschmidt $32 million and includes a club option of $14.5 million for 2019.
Goldschmidt emerged as the Diamondbacks' everyday first baseman in 2012, his first full season in the majors. In 145 games, he batted .286 with 20 home runs, 43 doubles and 82 RBI.
The 25-year-old has had a splendid spring as well, hitting a robust .410 with a .486 on-base percentage in 28 games.
Despite his limited experience at the big league level, the Diamondbacks clearly view Goldschmidt as one of their cornerstone players.
"This is the only place I wanted to be so I'm thrilled to know that I will be here long-term," Goldschmidt said in a statement Saturday. "I can't wait for the season to start, and I hope that we can bring another World Championship to the fans of Arizona."
Selected by Arizona in the eighth round of the 2009 draft out of Texas State, Goldschmidt reached the majors two years later after posting impressive numbers in his minor league career.
Goldschmidt, who never played a game in Triple-A, batted .314 with 35 homers and 108 RBI at Advanced Single-A in 2010 and compiled a .306-30-94 line at Double-A the next year before being promoted to the majors.
