Colombia goalie fails drug test at Women's WCup

FRANKFURT, Germany – A backup goalkeeper for Colombia failed a drug test at the Women's World Cup and was suspended by FIFA on Tuesday.

Yineth Varon took an out-of-competition test Saturday in Leverkusen, soccer's governing body said. FIFA did not say what substance was involved, but the player had the right for her "B'' sample to be tested. FIFA medical chief Michel D'Hooghe declined comment.

Colombia, appearing in its first Women's World Cup, lost 1-0 to Sweden in its opener Tuesday in Leverkusen. Colombia coach Ricardo Rozo wouldn't comment on Varon's suspension.

The last doping case at the men's World Cup involved Diego Maradona. The Argentine great was kicked out of the 1994 World Cup in the United States after testing positive for stimulants. He was banned for 15 months.

Last month, five Mexico players tested positive for clenbuterol in pre-competition testing at the Gold Cup. Soccer officials allowed Mexico to replace the players. FIFA President Sepp Blatter said Saturday contaminated meat was the cause.
