Manchester, England (SportsNetwork.com) - Manchester City inched closer toward clinching a place in the top four by grabbing a 2-0 victory over West Ham United at the Etihad on Sunday.

The Citizens entered the contest on the back of three defeats from their last four Premier League outings, but an own goal from James Collins in the 18th minute settled some nerves and put the hosts at ease.

Sergio Aguero managed to double the advantage in the 36th minute to add a bit of insurance, but it proved to be more than enough as City improves to 64 points to add a greater cushion ahead of fifth-place Liverpool.

Tottenham, meanwhile, remained in the hunt for European football next season by taking maximum points from its meeting with Newcastle on Sunday with a 3-1 win at St. James' Park.

Nacer Chadli opened the scoring for Spurs in the 30th minute only to see Jack Colback bring Newcastle back into the match with an equalizer in the opening minute of the second half.

The remainder of the affair, however, belonged to Tottenham as Christian Eriksen notched the winner in the 53rd minute while Harry Kane tacked on a late insurance goal.
