Kansas City, MO – Kansas City Chiefs head coach Todd Haley confirmed Monday that running back Jamaal Charles will miss the remainder of the season because of a knee injury.
Charles was hurt during Kansas City's opening drive of Sunday's game against Detroit. Haley, at his press conference on Monday, did not mention the exact nature of the injury, but it has widely been reported as a torn ACL.
"Jamaal will be placed on injured reserve," Haley said Monday. "Injuries are a part of this game. It's unfortunate for Jamaal. Jamaal had worked very hard to take this to the next level. I know he's hurting pretty good inside."
Charles was running toward the sideline and stepped on the first down marker before tumbling to the turf. He was favoring his left knee and was eventually taken into the locker room on a cart.
Named to the Pro Bowl last season after rushing for a career-best 1,467 yards with five touchdowns, the fourth-year veteran had 12 carries for 83 yards in his brief stint this season.
Thomas Jones, a 12-year veteran, and Dexter McCluster will likely see much of workload in Charles' absence. Jones had 40 yards on 12 carries in the 48-3 loss to Detroit on Sunday, while McCluster added 51 yards on eight attempts.
