Chen announces retirement following DFA

( - Veteran pitcher Bruce Chen has thrown his final pitch, announcing his retirement Monday after a 17-year career in the majors.

Chen was signed by the Indians to a minor-league contract in mid-February and pitched to a 12.79 earned run average in two starts. On Friday against the Rangers, Chen lasted just 2 1/3 innings and gave up three runs on seven hits, including a pair of first-inning homers.

He was designated for assignment the next day and said Monday via Twitter, "Today, I would like to announce my retirement. For the last 22 (years) I have been doing what I love for a living. I feel blessed and fortunate."

The 37-year-old Chen went 82-81 with a 4.62 ERA in 400 career games (227 starts) with 11 teams.
