Cauley, Dawson share lead at McGladrey Classic

Sea Island, GA – Rookie Bud Cauley and Marco Dawson both fired a 8-under 62s on Thursday to share the lead after one round of the McGladrey Classic.

Cauley, who is seeking his first PGA Tour win, carded six of his eight birdies on the outward nine on the Seaside Course at Sea Island Resort en route to sharing the first-round lead.

"I really just hit good shots," said Cauley. "I hit good wedge shots and put the ball in the right spot on the green to leave myself pretty easy putts."

Dawson, also searching for his first tour victory, recorded nine birdies and a bogey. The 48-year-old's best career finish came in 1995, when he placed second at the Greater Milwaukee Open.

Greg Owen, Boo Weekley and Rod Pampling are tied for third at 6-under, while Sea Island residents Zach Johnson and Davis Love III are part of a group deadlocked at 5-under.

Johnson had five birdies during his bogey-free round and his Ryder Cup captain, Love, tallied six birdies and a bogey.

David Toms, Danny Lee, Joe Durant, Michael Thompson, Brian Gay, Camilo Villegas and Martin Flores also reside at 5-under.

"I've had enough outings and casual golf to where my clubs didn't feel like a sledgehammer when I got here this week," said Toms, who is playing in his first tour event since the Barclays in late August.

Jim Furyk, making his first appearance since the Unites States' shocking collapse at Medinah, is knotted at 4-under with a large group, which also includes Vijay Singh.

Defending champion Ben Crane, who took down Webb Simpson on the second playoff hole at this event last year, carded a 68 to sit in a group tied for 44th place.

Cauley, a native of nearby Jacksonville, Florida, was 2-under through nine before opening his outward stretch with consecutive birdies. After a par on No. 12, the rookie ripped off three more birdies before getting to 8-under with another on the 17th.

"I've played a lot of golf up here," said Cauley. "I feel comfortable on the course and I love coming back."

Dawson, meanwhile, was 7-under before stumbling to a bogey on the par-4 fourth. A quick recovery saw the veteran birdie his next two holes to reach 8-under. He closed with a trio of pars to reach 62.

NOTES: Cauley's 8-under-62 marked his career low on the PGA Tour...Dawson has missed the cut in each of his last two tournaments...Love is serving as the tournament's host...Last year, Crane poured in eight birdies in a 10-hole span in the final round to get into a playoff.
