The St. Louis Cardinals have placed first baseman Lance Berkman on the 15-day disabled list because of a strained left calf.

The move is retroactive to April 19.

Berkman, in his second season with the Cardinals, is batting .348 with a pair of runs batted in through seven games. He hit .301 with 31 homers and 94 runs batted in last year, earning NL Comeback Player of the Year honors.

The Cardinals activated infielder Skip Schumaker off the 15-day disabled list to fill the roster spot. Schumaker had been sidelined since mid-March with a torn right oblique muscle he suffered during an at-bat in spring training.

In 117 games last season, Schumaker hit .283 with two homers and 38 runs batted in. He was 3-for-13 in four games during a rehab assignment with Triple-A Memphis.
